Hearing the Voice of the True Shepherd
In John chapter 10, Jesus speaks about Himself as the True Shepherd, who watches over the sheepfold, and leads and protects the sheep. The sheep hear the voice of the Shepherd and follow His voice, as opposed to the voice of a stranger who is not the True Shepherd, and has no legitimate right to lead the sheep.
The Sheepfold: the Place of Rest and Safety
The sheepfold is a shelter for the sheep; It is a safe place of enclosure, where the sheep are led and protected by the true Shepherd.
This sheepfold represents the spiritual Kingdom of God, the kingdom of our Father, where the family of God dwells and finds shelter and guidance.
Jesus is the True Shepherd
Jesus is the Door to the sheepfold, the Kingdom of God. He is the One who has opened up the legitimate door (God’s way of access): He is the only legitimate Shepherd, who has the authority and the right to be the Shepherd, as opposed to the false shepherd, who claims to have the right, but does not have the right to lead the sheep.
They follow their Shepherd, for they know His voice
The sheep is the disciple, and the disciple hears the voice of Jesus.
This is the life of the disciple of Jesus. The disciple hears the voice of Jesus and follows His voice.
The Personal Experience of Hearing Jesus for Yourself
The Apostles and earliest disciples knew the voice of Jesus, they had an experience of the living Christ for themselves. To know Jesus, is to listen to His voice and to follow Him.
As a believer, you have the privilege of hearing the voice of the True Shepherd for yourself. This promise is received by you through faith in the Word of God given to you by the Lord Himself, that He intends for you to hear His voice, follow Him and reject the leading of any deceptive voices.
